CBD: A Beginner’s Guide

CBD: A Beginner’s Guide

Skyrocketing in popularity over the past few years, CBD has become a household name. But you’re not alone if you’re unsure of what CBD actually is. Or what it does and how to properly use it.

No worries! We’ve got you covered with a high-level overview of the basics of CBD.

So, what is it? CBD stands for cannabidiol, one of the main active ingredients in the cannabis plant. First and foremost, CBD is non psychoactive, meaning it does not cause the “high” that is associated with the cannabis/marijuana plant. (That high is caused by THC.) So, CBD can be used without triggering an altered mental state or dependence. According to the World Health Organization, “CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential… To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

Most CBD products (hemp-derived and containing less than .3% THC) can be legally bought and sold in the United States, however, it is still illegal under a few state laws, so be sure to check your local state laws before buying, just to be certain!

The widespread usage of CBD is relatively new, so the research is still young -- however, the evidence in support of CBD’s benefits is impressive.

  • A CBD product has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat epilepsy
  • On a diagnostic level, CBD is currently being studied as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and anxiety. (Source: Mayo Clinic)
  • CBD enthusiasts tout its ability to help with acne, anorexia, anxiety, depression, insomnia, inflammation, high blood pressure, muscle spasms, and more.

What to ask before you buy:

  1. Is it sourced in the USA? CBD experts recommend purchasing US-grown CBD, as the US is further along with growing and regulatory practices.
  2. Is it organic? Organic CBD will assure that you aren’t exposed to harmful chemicals and pesticides.
  3. Is the company transparent? Before buying, make sure the company shares its product label, clearly answers consumer questions, and is third-party tested for quality assurance.

CBD comes in a variety of different forms so you can find the perfect CBD to add to your routine. The most common forms of CBD include tinctures, oils, creams, lotions, capsules/pills, edibles, and vaporized CBD (e-cigs).

What’s the Best Form of CBD for Me?

With any medicinal health remedy, you’ll want to research the form and recommended dosage and start with small doses until you’ve landed on what works best for you. Although CBD is widely used to help alleviate many common ailments, you should consult your doctor if you are attempting to use CBD as a treatment for any serious medical conditions.

During your search, you may see a  few different terms describing the type of CBD. What is full-spectrum CBD? Full-spectrum CBD is the most natural form of CBD, undergoing to least amount of processing. It also contains all of the compounds from the cannabis plant, meaning it may produce more of the benefits vs what you might experience with CBD isolate. (Medical News Today)

Now that you’ve read up on the basics, you’re ready to begin your CBD journey!
